siphon tube siphon tube and tub

Here is an interesting gizmo I ran across lately, its a sipon tube. It will transfer water from one bucket to
another as in a recirculating system when you are trying to only pump clean water and not all the sediment.
You have to have the tubs or buckets full of water and then fill the tube and cup your hands over the ends
and flip it around and into the water quickly. Then the water will drain to the lower one as you pump it out.

classifiers

This is an old tip for successful prospectors but one that needs repeating.

Classify         Classify         Classify

Any Gold recovery system  (wet or dry)  will work much better if it is fine
tuned  to the majority of gold to be found.  If most of the gold in the area
is very fine use a fine screen to get rid of the large stuff.  Then slow down
the water, and / or, reduce the angle of riffle tray accordingly.  Just enough
water and angle to float off the lighter material and retain the gold as needed.
In a drywasher you can adjust the air flow and angle, even on a puffer you
can change the stroke of the bellows and riffle tray angle to tune it. This may
take a little extra setup time, but is well worth the time and effort.  Classifiers
can be homemade or bought, I have 3 homemade sizes 1ft. square out of 1 x
1 1/2 in.  boards and screen and screen molding boards.  Sizes of screen are
1/16 in win screen, 1/8 in win screen and 1/4 inch screen.  If you can get all
the material screened to about the same size, it will be a lot easier to separate
the gold out of it! If your concerned about losing some large gold run a metal
detector over your screened tailings.  Or run some of it in another cleanup to
see if you are losing any larger gold by screening.

Soaps

Add a drop or two of any dish soap to your recirculating system
this will reduce the surface tension of the water and let the fine
gold drop out. I like the Jet Dry myself.

Cholla Plant

Though it was time for another safety msg here. I had the
unfortunate luck to meet this plant this weekend. I don't
know how I did it but one of these Cholla balls got stuck
to the back of my hand. Now these have spines that have
barbs that do not let go when they stick you. So I tried to
sling it off and all it did was wrap around my hand and
stick me 5-6 more times. The only way to get it out is find
some needle nose pliers and start pulling. OUCH each and
every one, man does it hurt! Learn from my mistake, stay
away from it and if it does get ya don't sling it!
