Reading Master Title Plats

If you want to understand the Land Status of an area, you need to know how to read a Master Title Plat.

What is a Master Title Plat?

A Master Title Plat or MTP is a graphic depiction of the current land status for any particular township. It shows references for land transfers, rights of way, patents, mineral rights and any other land status transaction.

Master Title Plats are maintained by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and are available to the public.

Take a look at this well done one sheet tutorial from the BLM. It provides an excellent sampling and explanation of the types of information on an MTP.
